I browsed through some of my old Bug-a-Day stuff from 2016 looking for ideas, when I realized that my friend C never did send me a photo of the watercolor I made at her house (and left there). So I decided to recreate it as best I remember, resulting in the sloppy watercolor above ( Two weeks in, and the creative challenge I've set for myself is already kicking my ass, meaning I'm having difficulty carving out the time to complete something because I feel like there are myriad other things I should be doing) . The result was a tiger beetle decapitating many ants in soothing watercolor. "It's National Poetry Month! Write a poem or make something inspired by a poem you like" I decided to create tanka, a classical Japanese poetry style similar to haiku in that you have a set number of syllables per line. Tanka are 5-7-5-7-7 and often depend on puns and double entendres for meaning (I have no such skill). They were frequently introduced with a bit of prose describing the feeling, thoughts, mood, scenery, or any other bit of information about why or when it was composed, that gave further depth and context to the short poems. When a friend asked me to name a favorite insect I replied: The tiger beetle Mantispids are another Mantids, can't deny My favorite's hard to pin Can't even choose an Order! On discovering my beloved mantids belonged with vile roaches on the cladogram: Preying mantids may evolutionarily  be predatory elongated cockroaches, I pray not show revulsion More on classical Japan here . ...

Day 25 Make whatever you want but do it in a public place...get someone to take a photo of you making it. I went to the Maitland Farmers Market and completed this colored pencil drawing on a bench in front of Lake Lily. This of course was inspired by American Gothic (appropriate!). Husband and wife are a tiger beetle and mantis. I think they were attracted to each other's predatory instincts.  " My!  How  vicious  you are!" "Not as vicious as  you , my lovely! ...didn't you eat your last husband?"  This creative challenge is determined I will post pictures of myself online. So here I am scribbling diligently. My friend E's dog Stella is in the foreground. You can't hear it but we were treated to some modern renditions on synthesizer in the background. Complete!
